Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Africa, giving visitors the opportunity to encounter endangered mountain gorillas in their natural forest habitat. Trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in southwestern Uganda. Bwindi is the more popular destination and has four main trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Depending on the location of the gorilla family and the terrain, a trek can take around 2 to 7 hours, including the time spent searching for the gorillas.
A standard gorilla trekking permit currently costs US$800 for Foreign Non-Residents, US$700 for Foreign Residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African Citizens under Uganda Wildlife Authority’s July 2024–June 2026 tariff. The permit includes the guide fee, park entrance for the day, and a community development contribution. Once a gorilla family is located, visitors are generally allowed one hour with the habituated gorillas, observing their behaviour and taking photographs while following strict conservation guidelines.
For travellers who want a more immersive experience, Uganda also offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, particularly in Bwindi. Instead of the standard one-hour encounter, habituation visitors accompany researchers and trackers as they work with a gorilla group that is still becoming accustomed to human presence. This provides a longer and more in-depth opportunity to observe gorilla behaviour and learn about the habituation and conservation process. The current UWA tariff lists the habituation experience at US$1,500 for Foreign Non-Residents, US$1,000 for Foreign Residents, and UGX 750,000 for East African Citizens.
Beyond the unforgettable wildlife encounter, gorilla tourism also contributes to conservation and surrounding communities. Uganda Wildlife Authority shares park revenue with communities around protected areas, while a portion of gorilla permit revenue supports community development initiatives around Bwindi and Mgahinga. This makes gorilla trekking not only an exciting adventure but also an important part of Uganda’s wider conservation and tourism economy.
Gorilla trekking can easily be combined with other Uganda experiences to create a longer safari. Popular combinations include chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park, wildlife safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park, cultural experiences, Lake Bunyonyi visits, and scenic road trips through southwestern Uganda. For travellers looking for a truly memorable African adventure, combining gorilla trekking with Uganda’s diverse wildlife and landscapes offers an exceptional way to experience the Pearl of Africa.
Top Uganda Safari Destinations
Uganda is home to an impressive variety of tourism destinations, offering everything from mountain gorilla trekking and chimpanzee encounters to classic wildlife safaris, dramatic waterfalls, tropical forests, and exciting outdoor adventures. Whether you are interested in wildlife, nature, culture, or adrenaline-filled activities, Uganda’s diverse destinations make it possible to experience many different sides of the country on a single trip.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is best known for its exceptional mountain gorilla trekking experiences. The ancient rainforest is home to several habituated gorilla families, allowing visitors to trek through dense vegetation and observe these endangered primates in their natural habitat. Beyond gorilla trekking, Bwindi offers forest walks, birdwatching, cultural experiences, and opportunities to explore one of Uganda’s most biologically diverse ecosystems.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda’s most popular safari destinations, offering a combination of savannah wildlife, beautiful landscapes, and waterways. Game drives provide opportunities to see elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, antelopes, and other wildlife, while the Ishasha sector is famous for its tree-climbing lions. A boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel is another major highlight, offering close views of hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, and numerous waterbirds.
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park and is named after the spectacular Murchison Falls, where the Nile River is forced through a narrow gorge before plunging downstream. The park offers excellent opportunities for game drives, with wildlife including elephants, giraffes, lions, buffaloes, antelopes, and other species. Boat safaris on the Victoria Nile provide a different perspective of the park and bring visitors close to hippos, crocodiles, birds, and wildlife gathering along the riverbanks.
Kibale Forest National Park
Known as one of Africa’s best destinations for primate experiences, Kibale Forest National Park is particularly famous for chimpanzee tracking. Visitors enter the lush tropical forest with experienced guides and trackers to search for habituated chimpanzee communities. The park is also home to numerous other primates, making it an excellent destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers interested in Uganda’s fascinating forest ecosystems.
Kidepo Valley National Park
For travellers seeking a remote and less-visited safari destination, Kidepo Valley National Park offers an extraordinary wilderness experience in northeastern Uganda. Its expansive savannah plains, rugged mountains, and isolated location create a dramatic setting for wildlife viewing. Visitors can encounter elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and several species that are rarely seen elsewhere in Uganda. Kidepo is particularly appealing to travellers looking for solitude, adventure, and an authentic wilderness experience.
Jinja
Situated along the mighty River Nile, Jinja is Uganda’s leading destination for adventure tourism. The town is famous for white-water rafting and offers a wide range of activities including kayaking, bungee jumping, quad biking, boat trips, and Nile excursions. Jinja also provides opportunities to enjoy the river’s scenic beauty, explore nearby attractions, and experience the vibrant atmosphere of one of Uganda’s most popular adventure destinations.
